Kakegawa Castle

Kakegawa Castle
(Totoumi Province/Shizuoka Prefecture)

Although there are a lot of castles with restored castle towers, Kakegawajo castle is the oldest castle that was restored with wood. The restoration was aimed to recover the appearance in early Edo period and finished in the 5th year of Heisei era (1993).
The outer citadel (Ninomaru Goten) still exists today, and the inside is open to the public. During the period when Imagawa clan was in charge, Kakegawa-jo was built by his vassal, Asahina clan. When Ujizane Imagawa was chased out by Shingen Takeda from Sunpu, he took refuge in Kakegawa-jo, but was killed when Ieyasu Tokugawa's attacks forced open the gates.
Speaking of Kakegawa-jo, the saga drama protagonist Katsutoyo Yamauchi is famous for being the ruler. Katsutoyo accompanied Ieyasu Tokugawa during his Kanto shift, and built the castle tower. After that, he offered Kakegawa-jo to Ieyasu Tokugawa during the battle of Sekigahara, and was transferred to govern whole country of Tosa for his contributions after the war.
